The Wee Box

Wee Box 012

I recently dug out my jigs and started turning some of these threaded boxes again. I designed this box several years ago and it has evolved and improved with each one I made. I recently sent one to Alistair Begg, a Scottish gentleman in Cleveland, Ohio and he called it a “Wee Box”. I thought the name fit. I’m making a few of these boxes these days and I would entertain the idea of selling one. If you are looking for a cheap box, look somewhere else. The process takes a lot of time and this wood is premium quality and expensive. I have refined the process and dressed the inside with a piece of leather in the bottom and a mirror in the top. These Wee Boxes can serve several purposes including but not limited to storing guitar or banjo picks. Ladies seem to like them for their small jewelry items. It strikes me that one of these would make a good gift for that special person.  The uses are only limited by what will fit into them. Most of what I make are curly maple but I made a few in some figured walnut. They are finished in lacquer.

Here is an example of the typical curly maple box. It is around 2 1/4 inches in diameter and about 1 1/8 inches tall.

This one has a brown or maroon colored piece of leather in it.

Here you can see the quality of the finish and the size of it.

  1. I’m a banjo picker from Eastern Kansas. Saw one of these last at a bluegrass jam. A friend of mine Ty Green had one there and I thought wow those are cool. I would love to order one in Walnut to start and more later on. Let me know how to order. Thank you!

  2. I sent you an email about this. Thanks, Ronnie Nichols
